If the matter of discussion is DSLR camera, then in this matter there is no way you can avoid the name of GoPro. Every year the Brand adds newer technology to their products. GoPro always tries to catch the attraction of all most all the camera lovers in the world. As a result, they launch a camera for the professionals as well as for the people who catch photos for the hobby.
Being a leading manufacturer of DSLR camera, GoPro has launched a number of good DSLR cameras in the market. The latest of them is GoPro Hero 6 Black. A long and intense observation has been conducted to make this camera.
GoPro Hero 6 Black:
The GoPro Hero6 Black looks similar to the last year’s Hero5 Black. The solitary change in the outer shape is the Hero6 logo, which is almost invisible as glossy gray text on the matte gray body, which is to the outside of the way on the left side of the camera. The better and big changes are inside. A new image processor, the GP1, makes its debut here, and provides the Hero6 Black some fascinating slow-motion video options, bumps the maximum 4K frame rate to 60fps, and also features solid video stabilization. Its price is much higher than the previous year’s edition, but things to notice that it’s the best action camera we’ve tested.
The GoPro Hero6 Black hasn’t made any changes in the outer design from the previous year’s camera. It has the same two-tone black and dark gray motif, with a rugged, body that is rubberized which can go as deep as 33 feet (10 meters) without adding an external housing. Its height, width, and depth is 1.8 by 2.6 by 1.4 inches respectively and weighs around 4 ounces. This camera can work well when it gets wet.

Besides that GoPro Hero6 Black has a lot of new features. If text and photos are more your things, then here’s my listing of what consider to be the key new features:
1. New 4K at 60FPS:
GoPro Hero6 Black has the limit of 60 frames per second where the predecessor Hero5 Black was limited to 30 frames per second.
2. Image Stabilization at 4K:
Previously this was limited to 2.7K, though you still can’t do 4K/60.
3. New 1080p at 240:
This is a dramatic bump from the previous 720p at 240FPS, which is used in slow-mo.
4. New GoPro GP1 Chipset:
This in-house chipset for image processing replaces Ambarella, which GoPro and many others have used for years.
5. Better low-light performance:
This is probably what is considered as the two biggest changes on the camera. It’s mind-blowing. Also, they have enriched long exposure to 10-seconds from 2-seconds.
6. Better dynamic range of lighting conditions:
Like low-light performance, the speed and clarity here are astounding. Check out my comparison video below to see what I mean.
7. Better image stabilization:
3-Axis image correction in all angles, most notably the roll axis in wide shots (previously it didn’t correct for roll axis in wide).
8. New zoom slider option:
You can zoom 0-100% within the image to a custom framing. This essentially gives you tons of flexibility compared to existing narrow/medium crops.
9. New HDR Photo Capture:
While previously there was WDR, this is actually a 3-image compilation.
10. Dual 2.4Ghz/5Ghz for downloads:
This dramatically speeds up downloads for larger files over 5Ghz, GoPro says this will double speeds, and that seems valid in my case.
11. Changed file formats:
For 4K60 and 1080p240, they’ll now use H.265 HEVC file formats, which halves the file space requirement. It also introduces some compatibility issues though (I’ll cover later).
12. Slightly improved voice control:
You can now turn on the camera entirely via voice, previously you had to power it on manually.
13. All mounts/cases stay the same:
While not new, it’s definitely notable. Mounts, batteries, cases, etc… are all identical to Hero5 Black.
14. Increased camera algorithms:
The camera can now detect faces, though it doesn’t expose that yet. It’s used by Quik for processing afterward.
15. Much faster touchscreen:
Simply put it’s faster. It responds to commands faster, both in camera mode as well as gallery mode.
GoPro Hero6 Black isn’t the first action camera which provides 4K video at 60fps—the Y1-4K+ did it first. And if you don’t bother to have an addition to case for protection, then 4K+ is a solid choice for less money. But the Hero6 is built GoPro-tough, and it adds more than faster frame rates and stabilization.
At the center of the camera is a new image processor. GP1 is the name of that, but it’s not so much about what it’s named, as what it does. It almost doubling the maximum frame rate is a big plus for action shooters—the Hero6 can shoot at 240fps at 1080p, which means you can smooth action to one-tenth speed with 24fps playback.
Another big addition is digital stabilization. It’s not available at the top frame rates—that means you won’t be able to add in-camera stabilization to 4K 60fps, 2.7K 120fps, or 1080p 240fps footage. But it is available at 4K at up to 30fps, 2.7K at up to 60fps, and 1080p at up to 120fps. It works well, but it’s not quite the substitute for a powered gimbal that GoPro would have you believe.
One big change you’ll likely notice is the video compression codec. While most video uses the long-established H.264 codec, the highest frame rate footage—60fps at 4K, 120fps at 2.7K, and 240fps at 1080p—is compressed using HEVC, also referred to as H.265. It doesn’t have as broad software support but is becoming more and more common in devices. The latest iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy smartphones support it, for example.
In addition to 4K, 2.7K, and 1080p, the Hero6 supports a number of other formats. You can shoot at a 4:3 aspect ratio in 4K at up to 30fps and 4:3 2.7K at up to 60fps. You can also shoot at 1440p at up to 60fps and 720p at 50 or 60fps; both resolutions are in standard 16:9 aspect ratio.
The GoPro is capable of shooting at a very wide angle, but with it comes some fish-eye distortion. That’s the nature of the camera, and when you’re shooting in 4K it’s what you get—the top resolution uses every pixel the sensor has to offer. If you’re working at 2.7K (and lower resolutions) you can go for a more modest Medium or Narrow field of view. They’ll still show distortion, but if you want to remove it in-camera you can opt for Linear mode, available only in 2.7K or 1080p. Its field of view is narrower than the full view of the lens, but still very wide angle.
